Bryn Stewart, Garden City cosmetology major, competed against students from three other schools in prepared speech to secure her place at nationals in Kansas City in June.
"We were very excited and proud when Bryn's name was called for the gold medal in prepared speech," Val Roderick, director of cosmetology said.
Three cosmetology students participated in the Vocational and Industrial Clubs of American (VICA) competition in Wichita in April. The Professional Development Program (PDP), a curriculum developed by VICA, is an employability skill-training curriculum.
Mari Rojas, Garden City, earned second place in the Hair Styling category with Angel Wright, Scott City, as her model. Receiving a third place was Talia Lewis, Ulysses, in the Artificial Nails category, with Amanda Fry as her model.
The college cosmetology department has been participating in VICA for more than 15 years. Stewart joins the ranks of eight students who have received gold medals at state competition.
Stewart said VICA allows students to compete in their trade skills. National competitions include only state gold medalists, however, job opportunities arise at state competitions for everyone.
"One of the big benefits of going to competition is not only the recognition if you win and go to the national level but also there are business opportunities," Stewart said. "Employers go and watch everyone."
Stewart is in the cosmetology school to gain skills of a professional beautician, however, she competed in the prepared persuasive speech category. She participated in public speaking all through high school. She was in debate her freshman year and forensics her freshman through junior years. Stewart went to state for speech her sophomore and junior years and placed both years. Prose, or animated story telling, also gained Stewart's attention her junior year, in which she also placed at state. She did plays trying to stay active, but spent most of her time in broadcasting by doing the daily news and announcements.
