The magic of learning will be extended to area children once again this summer with the return of Garden City Community College's Kids' College program.
Some of the more popular classes for Kids' College include the GCPD's 'detective camp' and 'home alone' sessions, as well as the American Red Cross 'babysitting' class.
The Kids' College sessions run from 8:45 a.m. to
4 p.m. with an hour lunch break at noon.
The first session of Kids' College will begin June 10 and run through June 27. The second session begins July 8 and runs through July 25. Children from third to eighth grade may enroll.
Last summer more than 50 area children participated in the program. This year, however, program administrators are hoping to double participation.
"We have anticipated that the enrollment will be larger, and have added double the classes," Norma Jean Dodge, program coordinator, said. "Currently we have about thirty kids enrolled. Enrolling for Kids' College is going on now until May 31."
The college's Continuing Education department has partnered with St. Catherine's Hospital, the Garden City Police Department and the American Red Cross to coordinate classes. St. Catherine's hospital is sponsoring a "taste of home" class along with a first aid and CPR class.
Ashley Rich, director of the emergency department at St. Catherine's Hospital will be team teaching the first aid and CPR class this summer. Rich said she hopes that the students will be able to learn the basic first aid techniques that can help them when they are out with friends and family.
"This class is going to be a lot of fun and the students as well as instructors will be very involved with the class," Rich said.
The Family Resource Center contacted Dodge earlier in the year to let her know that they had grant money to give toward scholarships for Kids' College, as well as the program receiving a grant through the Finnup Foundation.
"With the two grants combined we had $2,136 to give away for scholarships," Dodge said. "As of now I have only awarded $528 of that."
In order to qualify for a scholarship, the student must already be on the reduced meal plan at school. Parents interested in applying for a scholarship for their child should contact Dodge at 620-275-3232.
