Traveling to Coffeyville, Garden City met up with teams such as Barton County, Butler County, Hutchinson, Neosho, and more for the meet.
"We try not to put too much emphasis on the region meet, because we want our best forces outdoors," head coach David Self said. "Usually we'll put each athlete in three or more events and we don't do that at the region meet. Usually it takes a couple weeks to recover from something like that and at this time of year we need them at their peak. Overall we could have scored higher in a couple of things, but my goal right now is, I want the kids to do well at the national meet."
Garden City came out with four first-place finishes last weekend as well as seven second-place finishes.
In the men's 400-meter hurdles, Reggie Malvo finished in first place with a time of 52.33 seconds. Malvo also finished fourth in the men's 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.05 seconds.
In the men's high jump, Brandon Gross finished in first place with a jump of 2.03 meters. Other first place finishes included Jeb Meschke in the javelin throw with 64.09 meters, and Ladonna Moore in the women's triple jump with a jump of 12.42 meters.
In the men's 100-meter dash, Tyree Gailes pulled off a second-place finish with a time of 10.70. Gailes also placed fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.74. Also in the 200 meter dash, Cedric Penson had a seventh place finish for Garden City.
In the women's 400-meter hurdles, it was freshman Denethia Thompson that finished second with a time of 1:05.05. Another highlight of the weekend was Garden City placing second in both men's and women's 4x100-meter relays. The men finished with a time of 40.31 and the women finished with a time of 47.91.
The Garden City outdoor track meet will travel to Fort Hays State University this weekend to compete in the last big track meet of the season. The ones competing at Fort Hays will be the athletes who have not qualified for nationals already. .
"I think we're ready for nationals. I'm going to go in there and try to break some records and hopefully we will do good as a team and we can bring home some kind of trophy," Thompson said.
