Hills and mileage are key factors for the training of the Broncbuster Cross Country team as the seven men and five women gear up for the upcoming season.
"The team is putting in mileage at practice to build a decent base early in the season," Jon Rorabaugh, head coach, said. "They also train on hills because a lot of the courses they run have large hills."
This year's cross country team has five returning runners. These runners are Sarah Brisendine from Garden City, Rujelio Macias from Houston, Texas, Israel Salas from Houston, Texas, Joirel Mathas from Arlington, Texas, and Denethia Thompson from Houston, Texas.
During a typical cross country meet, the men run an 8k, which is a five miles. The girls run a 5k, which is 3.1 miles.
Cross Country is not just about the physical aspects it's also about the emotional ones.
"Right now we are mentally preparing the team for the challenges that lie ahead," James White, assistant coach, said.
Hard work is also a prime factor for the training of this year's team.
"The guys and girls train hard and they do what needs to be done," Rorabaugh said.
The men are doing a lot before the first meet.
"Right now I am training and listening to coach," Oneal Williams, Nassau Bahamas, said.
With the intense training, the runners will be given a chance to prove themselves at Barton County on August 28. The Barton County meet will have a course shorter than regular courses. This first meet will give the runners a chance to see how they compare to other runners.
"Barton County is an early scheduled meet," Rorabaugh said, "The team will be able to see what they're made of."
