A few names have been added to the athletic department, bringing new ideas and talent to the table.
Several changes were made to the athletic department staff during the summer. Some of those changes include additions to the track, basketball, and baseball programs.
James White was brought in to replace Jon Rorabaugh as assistant track coach.
Rorabaugh was moved up to head coach for the 2002 season. Last year, White, was the head coach for track and cross country at Colby Community College.
"I heard the position was available, so I called Jon (Rorabaugh) and he told me to come and check it out," White said. "Hopefully we can build up the distance program a little bit and we hope to get a National Championship in a couple years."
Another addition was Rick Sabath moving into the position of head baseball coach. Prior to coming to Garden City, Sabath was the head baseball coach at Cloud County for three years. The coach, originally from Kansas City, was offered the job by athletic director, Dennis Perryman.
Sabath said he hopes to salvage the pride in Garden City by bringing back a winning team that can work together.
"Our main goal for right now is to establish a team mind set, helping each other as a team, and doing things as a team," Sabath said. "We have such great facilities here and such a great tradition that we just want to uphold that."
"We feel that with our baseball field, our indoor facilities, and support from the administration, this baseball program is in the top five baseball programs in the country."
Also in the athletic office, students and faculty will find Secretary Karen Stanley. Stanley is from Hooker, Okla., where she worked at an electric co-op and an accounting department before coming to Garden City. Stanley said that her husband was transferred here and she saw the job in the newspaper.
The resignation of former assistant trainer Steve Zimmerman left a position which was filled by Dan Evans.
Perryman said that with that much turnover in hiring new staff, it is hard to take, but GCCC has been fortunate with the people they have hired.
"They are good people with a good work ethic who want to be here," Perryman said. "They get along great with people in the building and on the campus.
I think that they are going to provide some good leadership for the basketball, track and baseball programs. Overall I feel really good about our staff."
