The cross country team endured its first home meet of the season, Saturday, Sept. 21 hosting a duel race against Colby Community College.
"Rujelio (Macias) ran awesome," James White, assistant coach, said. "He took the lead early and led the race the whole way."
Finishing first for the men was Rujelio Macias, Houston, Texas. He finished the 5 mile race with a time of 27:55.
"This race was hard, but also kind of fun," Macias said. "It was a different course because it had jumps, ditches, and mud."
The runners ran on the fields around the GCCC track and field complex.
O'Neal Williams, Nassau, Bahamas, was the only other Buster who did not finish early due to injury. Williams placed third with a time of 29.39.
For the women, Alyson Algrim, Garden City, placed second out of a field of five runners with a time of 25.35. Coming in third was Tinka Thompson, Houston Texas, with a time of 25:36. Sarah Brisendine, Garden City, came in fourth, and Meilani Koehn, Montezuma, placed fifth.
"Although I missed a (turn) in the course, I thought I competed well," Brisendine said. "I had a good pace because Cliff [Dunlap, volunteer assistant coach] helped me pace."
Koehn was also pleased with her results.
"It was a good experience," Koehn said. "It was the first time I had ran a 3.1 mile race, and I went out and stayed relaxed."
During this race, sickness plagued the Busters.
"Alyson [Algrim] ran well, but she was sick. Sarah [Brisendine] had a cold," White said.
The Busters competed in their first regular season meet, Saturday, Sept. 14, at Colorado College.
Macias took 14th during the five mile race, and was the only Garden City male to cross the finish line. His time was 28:32.
In the women's division, Brisendine placed 40th at Colorado with a time of 22:26.
"That was a fun meet," Brisendine said. "The park was near the college, and it was beautiful and cool there. I also had a decent time for it being at altitude."
The busters are gearing up for Oklahoma State on Oct. 5.
