A public reception Saturday, Oct. 5, kicked off the fifth annual juried art exhibition of the Sandhills Art Association in the Mercer Gallery.

The reception was in honor of the newly set up art exhibition and offered refreshments as awards were presented to artists.

The display featured approximately 45 pieces of work by artists from throughout Southwest Kansas. The exhibition will show through the month of October.

Pieces displayed in the exhibition range from oil paintings, watercolor paintings, acrylics, drawings, mixed-media creations, collages, pastels, sculptures, ceramics and other media.

The receptions offered artists a chance to see where they stood among their ranks.

Cash awards were given for best of show honors, as well as first through third place prizes. The artists competed for a total of $1,500 in awards.

All of the work in the exhibition was required to be original, and must have been produced within the past two years, according to Wanda Stallings, one of the organizers.
