Overcoming injuries and learning to compete are the keys to the Buster harriers as they prepare for regionals, Oct, 28.

To prepare for regionals, the harriers hosted the Garden City Cross Country Invitational, Oct. 17. Teams from Barton County and Colby Community College participated in the meet.

"Barton is an excellent cross country team and Colby is very strong division two team," James White, assistant track coach said. "They gave us an idea of what we need to do to qualify for nationals."

On the men's side, Rujelio Macias, Houston, led the harriers, placing third out of 17 men with a time of 22:11 for the 3.1 mile race. Even with the third place ranking, Macias was disappointed with his race.

"It was a bad race," Macias said. "I didn't run my game plan and I started out too fast."

Reggie Malvo, Houston, placed 15 in the race, running with a time of 25:46. Carl Rolle, Nassau, finished 16 with a time of 27:34. Brent Lawson, Rifel, Colo., finished the race 17 with a time of 27:38.

Pacing the women harriers was Rachelle Ewy, Syracuse. Ewy finished fifth out of 16 girls for the two mile race with a time of 13:43.

Sarah Brisendine, Garden City, placed sixth for the Busters with a time of 14:11. Alyson Algrim, Garden City, finished eighth with a time of 14:33. Meilani Koehn, Montezuma, placed ninth. Her time was 15:17.

The Buster harriers also competed at Hays, Oct. 12.

Macias paced the Busters, placing 11 of 116 men with a time of 26:10 for the five mile course.

"Running at Hays was fun," Macias said. "I would have ran a lot faster if it weren't for the wind."

O'Neil Williams, Nassau, finished 39 with a time of 27:17. Rolle placed 97. He finished with a time of 32:53.

Ewy led the Lady Busters for the 3.1 mile course. She placed 43 with a time of 21:09.

Brisendine placed 51 with a time of 21:32.

"It was cold and windy, but my time was faster than last year," Brisendine said.

Algrim finished 55 with a time of 22:33.

Deneitha Thompson, Houston, placed 59 with a time of 23:11. Koehn finished 64 with a time of 23:32.

In preparation for regionals, the team has set many goals.

"I want to stay focused and not slow down, no matter what," Brisendine said. "I know that I can make it and I will."
