In conjunction with two leading specialists of the Hispanic Economic Development Corporation, HALO works to prepare Southwest Kansas high school students for the future with their annual Hispanic Student Day.
"HALO has hosted Hispanic Student Day for 16 years," Frankey Schmidt, HALO sponsor, said. "It is a good event. Hispanic Day brings minority students from the area and presents them with opportunities for the future."
The Hispanic American Leadership Organization is hosting Hispanic Student Day 2002 on Nov. 7 at GCCC. The event will include two keynote speakers from HEDC, out of Kansas City. Juniors and seniors from throughout Southwest Kansas are expected to attend.
The day's activities include registration and refreshments from 8 to 8:30 a.m. at Saffell Library and a welcome session at 8:30 a.m. in the auditorium of the Pauline Joyce Fine Arts Building. The keynote speakers' presentation will take place from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. and a series of breakout sessions will follow from10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Students will eat lunch at the college and participate in a talent show at 2 p.m. Students are planned to depart at approximately 3 p.m.
Hispanic Day will feature performances by GCCC's Latin Heat, Garden City High School's Latin Lingo, and IceSis, a local rapper.
