Civilization has become prone to pleasing trends. Advertisers say one particular item is cool and the next thing a person knows, everyone has the same clothes, same hair, and same appearance. In response to this realization, a person may decide that they oppose being just another sheep in the vast herd, they decide to be the black sheep and go for something slightly out of the ordinary. That person decides to make and apply their own hair dye.

Perhaps the town that this rebel lives in is nothing but a Podunk spot on the map and hair dye is unavailable. Not a problem; hair dye can easily be formulated with a couple household accommodations. An inexpensive, yet effective hair dye is created without difficulty by using magic markers and Kool-aid.

In order to get the best results, it is recommended that a person preparing to dye their hair should bleach it first. Any hair bleach will suffice. Without bleach the concoction will still dye a person's hair, however the color will not be as intense, nor will it last as long.

Before a person begins compiling the mixture to dye their hair, the magic marker Kool-aid mixture must be prepared. The mixture is extremely permanent and enormously messy. Rubber gloves are very important. A bowl and spoon are needed to hold and mix the dye, preferably plastic or paper. Next and most important, choose a magic marker and Kool-aid combination that are similar in color. For example, if the person chooses a purple marker they should choose grape Kool-aid. If the magic marker Kool-aid combination is not similar in color the results could turn the person's hair a very undesirable brown.

It is now the proper time to begin making the hair dye. First, the bottom cap must be pulled off the magic marker exposing the insides of the marker. It may be difficult to pry off the bottom cap; if necessary a pair of pliers may be applied to remove the cap. Once the cap is removed, the ink inside can be removed from the shell of the marker. Persons should use caution; the ink inside the marker will stain hands and fingers. It is the main ingredient in the recipe. Rubber gloves should be worn and the ink squeezed into the bowl. The packet of Kool-aid can be torn open. It can be poured into the bowl with the ink from the marker. The ink and Kool-aid can be mixed with the spoon until the mixture becomes a semi-thick paste.

Once the paste is developed it can be applied to the hair. It is the person's choice on how they want to apply the mixture into their hair; whether they apply stripes, highlights, spots, or dye it all. Be sure to rub in thoroughly. The mixture should be left in their hair 15 to 30 minutes. Hair should be rinsed with lukewarm water when time has expired. Use shampoo to wash out the mixture completely. Dispense of disposable bowl and spoon. If not disposable, wash immediately to avoid stains.

This simple and inexpensive method is a quick, effective way to avoid being a sheep. Person's interested in applying this mixture to their hair should be prepared for 'baa-a-ashing' from the herd.
