Area youth gathered from 9 a.m. to noon, Oct. 26, at the Garden City Community College gymnasium for the first basketball buddy day camp.

"We try to target kids in and around the Garden City area in grades first through sixth," Earl Diddle, head basketball coach, said.

According to Diddle, GCCC coaches provided students with lectures about education, attitude, and how to understand parents and coaches. The men's basketball team was then introduced to the young crowd. Team members then showed the kids drills to help improve basic basketball skills.

"There were about 80 participants, which was a tremendous turnout," Diddle said.

With such a good turnout, look for buddy day to continue in the years to come.

"We plan on having it every year with expansion," Diddle said. "I think buddy day is good for the players, the community, and the participants. We had a lot of fun and met a lot of new people."
