The room is silent. Students are sitting at their desks wondering what is about to happen to them. They know the exam did not go as well as they planned, and their eyes are filled with horror as the instructor enters the room.
Pacing back and forth, the instructor tries to make eye contact with the students, but the students are looking at anything but the instructor. As the instructor begins the lecture, students find it harder to grasp how they did so poorly on the exam.
As finals draw near, students anticipate what horrors lie ahead. The stressing over projects, presentations and final examinations build the anxiety that students at any university or college have. GCCC has something different; teachers who care.
Many students dread lectures from a teacher after a bad test, but it only proves one thing. The teacher cares enough to let their veins pop out of their forehead in worry about the grades of the students.
At what point will a larger university professor let their guard down to show emotion for their students? No large university brings on as much of a family figure as the teachers at GCCC.
This is not only true in exams, but in the assignments that students struggle on. Students are given reports and regular worksheets and they have an expectation to complete these assignments.
Even though they do receive a failing grade for not finishing these tasks, the teachers are there to encourage them for the next go-around.
Instructors also offer help to those who need it. Most instructors leave holes in their schedule just for students who may need academic support.
We at the Silhouette are pleased to have instructors like these: those who have dedicated their lives to helping students like us reach our goals to become successful in life. These instructors have taught us to reach over the moon and touch the stars. We are pleased to be at an institution like GCCC.
