At 3 a.m. on Dec. 4, both Mike Cruz and Hector Morillo were out and about. They spent the dark hours of the morning moving snow and clearing the walkways around campus.
"It takes four to five hours." Cruz said. "We move snow and put down icemelt. Everyone would like to sleep in, but it's a lot easier to do when there aren't so many people around."
It is this kind of dedication that has made Morillo and Cruz stand out, according to their co-workers.
"They might look like they would be grouchy," said Gina Wishon, physical plant office manager. "But they're actually both very easy to work with," Wishon works with Cruz and Morillo in the Physical Plant office, where campus maintenance is carried out.
"Mike is as dedicated as they come." Jack Rutherford, director of physical plant, said.
Cruz has worked for this department for about five years, and said that while the hours are long sometimes, he enjoys his job.
"They're both very outgoing." Sam Ortiz, maintenance, said. "We had a water leak the night before, so Hector only got a few hours of sleep." Morillo has worked for the college for about four years. According to Rutherford, Morillo is capable in almost any task he sets his hands to.
"Hector is a jack-of-all-trades, he will do whatever it takes to get the job done." said Rutherford. "They both are a real asset."
