Two members of the student government association were honored as certified leaders at the National Student Government Leadership Conference Nov. 22-25, Orlando, Fla.
"This is the first year for GCCC to be recognized at the national conference," Ryan Ruda, SGA co-sponsor, said. "It was really quite an honor."
Jessica Garcia, executive president of SGA, and Josh Unruh, freshman vice-president of SGA, were honored at the National Student Government Leadership Conference with a certification as Student Government National Leaders.
"Everybody had the option to take the certification test," Unruh said. "Those of us who felt it would really help in the future wanted to take it."
According to Ruda, more than 1,000 students and advisors from all over the nation attended the conference; 80 students were honored as certified Student Government National Leaders.
Students participated in a listing of workshops. The workshops covered topics related to improving leadership, such as: Legal Issues for the Student Leader, Effective Communication: The Ultimate Leadership Skill, Train the Trainers- Engaging Groups Effectively, Publicity and Promotions and Lessons in Leadership.
"To be certified, students attended educational workshops that encouraged better leadership," Garcia said. "After attending the workshops students interested in becoming certified leaders took a test composed of 100 questions, if you passed the test you were certified as a Student Government National Leader. I am really glad I seized the opportunity to become a certified student leader. The information I learned will surely be something I can use throughout my life."
