1. A massive march is led on Washington, D.C. civil rights activists asking for the passage of the Civil Rights Act.

2. Martin Luther King, Jr. is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in Norway.

3. Malcolm X forms his own religious organization after leaving the Nation of Islam, modifying his views of black separatism after his journey to Mecca.

4. The phrase "black power" is first used in regard to civil rights by Stokely Carmichael, chairman of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, during the James Meredith March in Mississippi.

5. Maulana Karenga, a professor at California State University, creates the African-American holiday known as Kwanzaa, patterning it after various African harvest festivals.

6. Muhammad Ali, heavyweight champion, refuses his induction into the armed forces, and is banned from the ring and stripped of his title.

7. Martin Luther King, Jr. is assassinated in Memphis after over a week of riots broke out around the nation.

8. Shirley Chisholm is elected to the U.S. Congress, becoming the first African-American woman to hold a position in congress.

9. Hank Aaron hits his 715th home run, defeating the record Babe Ruth set in 1935.

10. Jesse Jackson, a civil rights leader, announces his desire to run for the Democratic presidential nomination. This marks the first time an African-American makes a serious bid for the presidency.
