The Garden City Community College men's basketball team is currently without a coach following the resignation of head coach Earl Diddle March 27 that came as a surprise to many, especially his players.
"Nobody had a clue," Joseph "Mookie" Works, San Antonio, Texas, said. "It wasn't like he was parading around letting everybody know. He was kind of sneaky with it."
According to Works, Diddle brought the team together that day to let the players know he would be leaving to take a position as the women's head basketball coach at Butler County, but didn't give the team what Works considered to be a reasonable explanation.
"He just said it was a career change," Works said, "and that it was closer to an airport so he could go in and out to see his family a lot easier. He basically gave us the runaround."
Works said he did not understand Diddle's actions.
Diddle's resignation may have caused problems in the recruiting process for the GCCC men's basketball.
"They [the coaches] lost all their recruits, I believe, that Coach Diddle recruited," Works said. "But I think next year is going to be a lot better team. It's going to be more a run and gun offense instead of the half-court offense he [Diddle] brought."
