The Meats team returned home with a renewed pride after being named No. 1 in the beef judging category at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Meats contest, March 8.
"It's an honor to be known as the best beef judgers in JUCO ranks," Jeff Mai, Garden City, said. "It took a lot of hard work, dedication and extra time to get where we are."
Eleven teams competed for the national title, with the top five teams scoring within 36 points of each other. Clarendon College edged out Garden City's score of 3,655 by eight points to win the national title.
"The loss did hurt, but it did prove that this 2003 team is one of the best that have ever put on a hard-hat and carried a clipboard in a cooler, when you consider that they set five new team records and 36 individual records at GCCC," Clint Alexander, coach, said. "This team set three of the top 10 point totals scored in a contest ever at GCCC since meats judging began here in 1988. That's impressive."
This was the team's last competition of the year, and also the last competition for four team members who will not be returning next year: Clinton Trickey, Garden City; April Oberheim, Holcomb; Mai, Garden City; and Krystal Jones, Garden City.
"My highlight of this year has been getting to go to different competitions and meeting new people," Trickey said. "My advice for the team next year would be to practice and practice hard. Pay attention and they should do all right."
Next fall, the six returning members will compete in the first competition of the 2003-2004 year in Plainview, Texas, in October or November.
