Freedom doesn't come with any guarantees
Given the situations where freedom has been com-promised, both abroad and right here on our own campus, we realize just how grateful we are for the opportunities and support we do have.
Images of liberated Iraqis give us reason to pause and reflect on the basic freedoms we often take for granted. We don't realize how paralyzing one person's dominance can be. Someone or a group of persons who dictate what and how we think.
These freedoms deserve our protection and reverence - something some here on campus seem to have forgotten. Just because we step foot on campus does not mean we shed our rights as Americans to express our opinions.
In fact, we believe an institution of higher learning should encourage full discourse rather than stifle it. Controlling thoughts or opinions will only serve to stunt our development and reflect hypocrisy.
We can't take our rights for granted, for if we do, we're sure to have them violated.
Appreciating our opportunities to learn, mature
GCCC provides many opportunities to students, both academic and athletic in nature.
Last month, journalism students had the opportunity to travel to New York for a national convention. Phi Theta Kappa members traveled to Anaheim, Calif., last week for an international convention. The women's rodeo team placed fifth at the Panhandle State University rodeo in Oklahoma last weekend after competing against several four-year colleges including K-State and Oklahoma State.
GCCC may only be a two-year college in western Kansas, but it still offers students a vast array of opportunities for growth and development, and for that, we are thankful.
