Do we really need a new student center?

If we build it, will they come? Blueprints for the furnishing of the new student center are nearing completion, and the interior decorators are hard at work. However, the deficiency in the number of students using the existing student center has us wondering if the thousands of dollars being spent to build the new student center are going to waste.
When is the last time you recall walking into the student center to find it "overused?"
It is easy to agree that there is not much to do in Garden City, but the student center will not contain anything not all ready available to us.
Blueprints show that the student center will have two levels: a basement and a first floor. The basement will contain the new Broncbuster Bookstore, a computer lab, movie theatre and a meeting room. The first floor will contain a snack bar, video arcade, a SGA meeting room and office, an office for the nurse and an office for campus security.
Do we need a new bookstore and new offices, and what will become of the old ones? With budget cuts, it is not even guaranteed that there will be staff or faculty to fill the empty offices.
The new theatre will be capable of seating 50 people. It will be acoustically sound; meaning the super bowl could be going on and people outside of the room could study without interruption. The existing lounge in which a big-screen TV sits does not appear to be worn-out.
So why are we getting the new student center? Perhaps Garden City Community College hopes to claim the title for the prettiest community college campus.
Without a doubt, students are the heart of the college, and their comfort should definitely be a priority. However, the number of students enrolled at GCCC does not seem to match the dollars being put into the student center project. It seems that GCCC is striving to keep up with universities of a much larger size.
We, as students, will continue to see the cost of these sorts of projects on our bills, but we will also see the rewards. Let us just cross our fingers and hope the student center will look as good built as it does on paper. At this point, there is not much more we can do.
