As construction continues on the student center, the college is in the middle of preparations for furnishing the building.
Bill Hammond, dean of administrative services, said he expects for the center to be ready for the "Grand Gala Opening" around the end of November.
"The final coordination of the project, which will include the Follett Company [bookstore], Chartwells [snack bar], Garden City Community College Computer Services [computer lab] and the installation of furniture is all coming together," Hammond said. "We've been really happy about it."
According to Hammond, the cost of the project is approximately $2.5 million, though that figure is not necessarily set in stone.
"The project is on schedule and within the approved budget," Hammond said.
"D & D Builders has done a good job with the project."
A game room, including pool and ping-pong tables,
an arcade and a snack bar
will be available for student entertainment.
"At this point, we don't think we'll have the students pay [for game room use]," Beth Tedrow, dean of student services, said. "I think we'll set a time limit. We want everyone to have a chance to play."
The college is still looking into vendor options for pool and ping-pong tables as well as for arcade games.
Also, important offices, including the nurse's office, financial aid and the Broncbuster Bookstore will be moved into the new student center.
Kate Covington, director of residential life, said she is just glad the project is nearing completion.
"I'll be glad when it's done so the students will have a place to go," Covington said. "It's something this college has needed for a long time."
Hammond said the reasons for the difference in completion dates between September and November is because once construction is finished, it will take time to move furnishings into the student center and prepare it for student use.
"We'll be running in December," Hammond said.
"I'm really excited for something new," Maggie Renfrow, LaCrosse, said. "I can't wait for it to be done."
According to Hammond, donations for construction have reached $113,405, though the college would be very appreciative of any additional donors.
"We're very grateful to all the people who have donated to the project," Hammond said.
