Female employees and some students reported receiving more obscene calls on campus.
Capt. Mike Utz, Garden City Police Department, said 16 more harassing telephone calls were received on campus Sept. 24-25. However, no obscene messages were reported to police between Sept. 16 and Sept. 24, the dates that separate the two sets of phone calls.
"We believe the same individual is responsible for the calls," Utz said.
Campus security is working with GCPD in the investigation.
The voice mail system on campus was shut off Sept. 26 at 1 p.m. Jack Rutherford, physical plant director, said.
"We wanted the calls to stop," Rutherford said. "It was part of the investigation."
The voice mail system was reactivated Sept. 30 Rutherford said. There are no guarantees that this will stop the telephone harassment.
"This is an ongoing investigation and we are cooperating with the police," Rutherford said. "I will be meeting with a detective Sept. 30 to see if we have any leads."
Campus security asks that anyone who receives a harassing phone call forward the message to extension 210. Security will notify the GCPD and follow proper procedure.
"The calls are very annoying," College President Carol Ballantyne said. "We are working with the GCPD to stop the calls, find out who is making them and prosecute."
"There are problems arising on campus dealing with students. Although it effects students directly, we as students aren't being notified of what's going on. Concerns happening on campus should be a student's business."
- Brittany Steel
"Students were not informed from administrators. We had to hear about the threats from our coaches."
- Robbie Bullis
"Administration needs to inform the students better on what is going on. We didn't know anything about this until our coach told us about it."
- Eric Puvogel
Anyone with information can contact the Garden City Police Department at 276-1300 or Crime Stoppers at 275-7807. Calls to Crime Stoppers leading police to an arrest may be rewarded up to $1,000.
