Elliot Del Borgo, the American composer who wrote the music for the Lake Placid Winter Olympics, will spend two days in a music residency Nov. 19-20 at Garden City Community College.

Del Borgo, who has published 500 compositions, will share his experience by leading a workshop for public school instructors, conducting a youth ensemble of area high school musicians, carrying out career learning sessions for music students at the college and conducting an adult wind ensemble.

The ensemble work will culminate with a free public recital at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 20 in the auditorium of the Pauline Joyce Fine Arts Building, followed by a reception.

"It's going to be a rare opportunity to have an internationally known composer of both band and orchestra music right here in Garden City, where he can share his experience with students, teachers and the public," said James McAllister, GCCC director of bands.

"It's a real plus for our community, and a real advantage for our students," said Instrumental Music Director Bruce Spiller.

Del Borgo's residency is one in a series of new opportunities stemming from an expansion this fall of GCCC music programs.

The composer will also spend Nov. 21 and 22 in Southwest Kansas, as part of the Western Kansas Orchestra Festival, where performers will premiere one of his new compositions. Activities will be centered at the Pauline Joyce Fine Arts Building.

"This is really something special, so anyone who would like to attend any of Mr. Del Borgo's residency events on the campus is welcome," Spiller said, "whether they're students or members of the community."

"We reorganized and expanded our music programming this year to offer more opportunities to students and the public," he added, "and this is one of those opportunities."

One of the things the composer and conductor will do in working with GCCC students is explain the opportunities for careers in music composing, arranging, conducting and performing.
