In his career, Barry Switzer coached the Oklahoma Sooners to three national championships and the Dallas Cowboys to one Super Bowl championship. He perfected the Wishbone offense in Oklahoma and helped the Sooners have the most feared offense in the nation.

GCCC students and faculty will get the opportunity to hear Switzer speak Oct. 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the west gym.

"It's hard to say what students will take away from this," Ryan Ruda, SGA co-sponsor, said. "Barry speaks about leadership, motivation, and perseverance. Hopefully they will pull out information from that."

Before students hear Switzer speak, the football team will have a chance to meet Switzer.

"He's meeting with the football team prior to his speech," Ruda said. "This gives coaches the chance to get inside and to keep motivated."

It is my hope that the football team is motivated by Switzer's presentation. The team has improved since its first game against Dodge, but they need to have motivation from somewhere beyond their coaching staff. Perhaps Switzer will give them a few pointers that he used with the Sooners and the Cowboys, which will add to the homecoming adrenaline, and help the Busters 'wrangle the Dragons'.

In light of homecoming, it is very fitting that SGA chose an athletic coach to come to campus and speak. A big part of homecoming is the football game against Hutchinson, Oct. 18.

This year cross country also has its home meet Oct. 16. Students have the opportunity to support their Buster harriers and then go see Switzer give his presentation.

Although bringing a speaker like Switzer to campus may be somewhat pricey, it is well worth it.

Students who have followed football throughout their lives know about Barry Switzer and his coaching career.

"Barry Switzer's one of the greatest coaches of all time," Carson Shotton, Sublette, said. "He even helped Cowboys win a Super Bowl."

I believe that Barry Switzer's presentation will be a enlightenment to the football team as well as students around campus. All students should attend the event. Maybe they'll be motivated, maybe they'll be inspired, who knows.
