1. Two students dismissed for phone harassment
Police arrested Brian Freeny, Gilbert, Ariz., Oct. 16 for one count of telephone harassment and liabilities of crimes and Michael Bridges, Milwaukee, Wis., Oct. 20 for 41 counts of telephone harassment and four counts of computer trespassing. These students were said to be making obscene phone calls to females on campus. After looking over dorm security tapes, authorities said both Bridges and Freeny were in room 108 when the calls were made. Both students were dismissed from campus, but one used his right to appeal.

2. Threat leaves college community questioning safety on campus
Students and employees were given reason to dread coming on campus, Sept. 24, as a threatening statement was found in a west residence hall restroom on a partition at 3:30 p.m., Sept. 18. Police questioned how many individuals were involved in writing the statement. Normal security for the campus was enhanced, but there were no changes to class or event schedules. Students and employees were notified of the threatening statement via notices posted and e-mail. As a precaution, the crisis team met.

3. Vandals target dorm parking, damage exceeds $2,700
Vandals broke into two cars in the residential life parking lot, #date#, the first day classes were in session. The owners of the vehicles reported damages exceeding $500 each. One vehicle was a 1999 Chevy S-10 and the other was a 1992 Ford Thunderbird. Both had the driverside windows broken out. Both vehicles had a number of items stolen including: a 10-disc Delco CD changer, a bass boost stereo box, a Cobra radar detector, a cellular phone, and a Pioneer detachable face CD player. Campus security officer Ron Smith said approximately $2,700 in damages were reported.

4. Beth Tedrow Student Center opens to public; provides social hub
The dedication ceremony and grand opening of the Beth Tedrow Student Center was Dec. 18. Although officials believed the student center would be open for the public, construction problems forced the opening date to be pushed back to Jan. 18.

Workers from D & D Builders broke ground during the week of Jan. 26 through Feb. 1 for the Beth Tedrow Student Center. The project cost approximentally two million dollars and is part of the dorm renovation project. A snack bar, game room, theater, arcade, various offices, and the book store are currently available for students in the center.

5. Seward County names Tangeman interim president following Grote's death
James Tangeman, former GCCC president, was named as Seward County Community College interim president days after James Grote, president of the college, was found dead at his home, Oct. 14. Grote died with a gunshot wound to the head. Autopsy results indicate suicide as the official cause of death. The Liberal Police Department began its investigation shortly after his body was found by his wife, Linda Grote. According to the Southwest Daily Times, Grote was found passed out in a black 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis at the parking lot of a convenience store. Police connected the vehicle with a hit-and-run crash that had been reported earlier that evening.

6. War looms over Iraq, Bush vows to capture Hussein, family
Saddam Hussein, president of Iraq, was captured Dec. 14, nine months after the U.S. started its attack on Iraq. On Jan. 29, 2002, President Bush delivered a state of the Union address where he called Iraq, Iran and North Korea an "axis of evil." These countries were accused of concealing weapons of mass destruction. Bush gave Saddam Hussein and his sons 48 hours to leave the country before the U.S. would attack, March 17. Hussein failed to comply, so on March 20, the U.S. launched a pre-dawn missle attack on selected targets. Although Hussein has been captured and Iraq has been taken over, soldiers are still trying to inforce peace.

7. Board makes budget cuts, five faculty non-renewed
In a Board of Trustees meeting, April 22, the board passed a vote 4-2 that five members of the faculty would not be renewed for the 2003-2004 academic year. Instructers Phil Mayer, economics; Ed Porter, woodworking; Leighman Covington, philosophy; Gary Barker, drafting; and Winsom Lamb, social sciences were notified just prior to the meeting.

8. Student claims rights violated while expressing opinion
A conversation about an english paper got out of hand during the week of Feb. 11. Jennifer Simmons, Holcomb, wrote a paper about whether coaches should be instructors. Simmons, who is a tutor in the CLC, was accused of violating her position by revealing confidential information she gained as a tutor. Simmons claims she was not violating her position, she was merely expressing her opinion.

9. Women's Basketball places fourth in the nation
Who could forget this remarkable team. The team who was the first in GCCC history to become Jayhawk West Conference Champions. The team who overcame powerhouse Cowley County to nab the Region VI title. The team who made GCCC history by making it to the Final Four at the NJCCC national tournament. Chareka Terry, Plano, Texas, and Jasmine Irving, San Antonio, became All-Americans for the first time in Buster history and they were also named to the KJCCC All-Conference team. Terry was also named conference MVP while Irving was freshman of the year. Krystle Jim, Rio Ranche, N.M., was placed in the third All-Conference team. Bobby Brasel was also named All-Conference coach of the year.

10. Meats Team claims reserve national champ
The meats team received a second over-all rating to earn the Reserve National Champions title, March 8. The team became national champions in the beef judging category.

Eleven teams competed for the national title, with the top five teams scoring within 36 points of each other. Clarendon College of Clarendon, Texas edged out GCCC's score of 3,655 by eight points to win the national title.
