President Bush's plan to grant temporary work status to immigrants may impact southwest Kansas. According to the "CIA World Fact Book" 40 percent of the Mexican population lives below poverty, with a per capita income of $4,700 per year. U.S. per capita is $28,000.

Obviously America's econ-omy is better which is why people move here. However, can our nation really support more people in the work force?

Former GCCC student Berenice Knight, Holcomb, said she thinks problems within should come first.

"We have unemployed right here within our own community we should help," Knight said.

Finney County's unemployment rate is 3.2 percent.

GCCC student Juan Carlos Castillo, Garden City, who is originally from Mexico, said he understands the situation.

"It gives people opportunity and relieves me to see people like myself getting the opportunity to be in a better place," Castillo said.

Dave Halle, debate captain, said he doesn't think this is helpful.

"Bush is not closing the border down, which allows illegal immigrants that are already here undocumented clout because we don't know when they came here," Halle said. " We need to help those all ready here suffering before we open our arms any further."

As much as I wish the United States could do more for people, there is just too much of a load on our nation at this point. Let's fix what is wrong here before we take on any more.
