Cowboy poets showcase talents tonight

A quartet or more of southwest Kansas cowboy poets will take the stage Feb. 5 when the GCCC Rodeo Team revives anannual fund-raising show that took place 10 consecutive years through 2002.
The Cowboy Poetry Round Up is set for 7 p.m. tonight in the auditorium of the Pauline Joyce Fine Arts Building, with original verse to be recited by KeithDowner, Allen Bailey, Leonard Hitz and Randy Fisher.
In addition, performers appearing will include Don Eaves, a Haskell County country and western artist, based in Sublette; as well as Gale Seibert and his Sidekicks. Seibert is a former GCCC agriculture instructor who now operates Seibert Carcass Data Service, and agreed to help out this year with the fund raiser.
"The usual suspects will be around to whip out some good humor and fairly tall tales," said Jim Boy Hash, coach of the sponsoring rodeo team. "We didn't have one of these last year, but decided to bring it back. We're also going to spice things up a little, so we hope people will come on out for the evening."
Cowboy poetry is a popular western cultural phenomenon, given national attention by performers such as Baxter Black and Tom Bodett.
Admission will be $7 at the door the evening of the performance, or $5 in advance. Tickets should be available at a number of Garden City businesses, including Baker Boot, on Main Street; Out West, on Campus Drive; Crazy House, on west U.S. 50; and The Shoe Shop, on Eighth Street.
They'll also be on sale at the GCCC Athletic Office, and from Hash, on campus in the John Collins Technical Building. People who have questions may reach Hash at 620-275-3205. Funds will be used to help support the college rodeo team, which will resume the 2003-2004 competition circuit next month at Kansas State University.
