Rain is a rare commodity in Kansas, and while the farmers typically jump for joy upon the first droplet, it is not always welcomed by the players on the Buster baseball team.
After a 6-2 start, including a 2-2 split with Richland College in Dallas Feb. 21 and 22, the Busters were unable to host Lamar Community College March 3 due to rain.
"Everyday we go to bed thinking we'll have a game," Brandon Buckman, Colorado Springs, Colo., said. "It always sucks when the weather's bad. Baseball's one of those games you need ideal weather to play."
Also, a four-game weekend series scheduled against Frank Phillips in Borger, Texas, was cut in half due to the inclement weather. The Busters only participated Feb. 28, but swept the shortened two-game series 7-4 and 7-2.
According to Buckman, first baseman, the team has put up great numbers because they are firing on all cylinders at just the right time.
"This year we're doing pretty well in all facets of the game at the same time," Buckman said. "When you do that you're going to win games."
The team swept Richland College on Feb. 22 7-6 and 2-1 after dropping both games of the double header Feb. 21.
The Busters travel to Lamar, Colo., March 9. Over spring break, March 15 through 19, they head to Phoenix, Ariz., for a five-day tournament March 15 through 19.
Buckman said the team is eager for the trip.
"We're going to play some tough competition [in Phoenix]," Buckman said. "The tougher teams will play up to their level. The better teams you play, the more you improve."
