There is war being fought on campus. Not a bloody war like you would envision, but a war to decide who is best qualified to represent the student body of our campus. The election for SGA president is under way and the competition is fierce.
John Warren, Garden City and Justin Kash, Centralia Kan., are fighting for not only the presidency, but also the trust of the students here on campus. With everything happening on campus and classes getting close to being over this semester, many people say they have found it difficult to decide on a candidate.
Although Warren and Kash share many of the same ideas, they also have their differences. Warren believes he has the passion to do the job.
"I have a lot of leadership skills, passion and good resources to be president," Warren said. "When I set a goal, I finish it."
Warren is running what he refers to as a "Clean Campaign." Warren wants to make our campus a cleaner and more attractive environment for students. GCCC was originally a smoke-free environment and that is one thing Warren is focusing on. Warren said he would like to place designated smoking areas away from the doors of the buildings. This would ensure that students and faculty who do not smoke would not have to be around the smoke going from class to class. This would create better smoking facilities for those who do smoke and keep smoke out of the faces of those who do not like smoke.
Kash is in a class of his own you could say. Kash has SGA experience, as he is currently the executive secretary. Next year he says he believes he will be able to implement his knowledge now and increase student involvement.
"The most important thing on campus is the students," Kash said. "As Student Government President I will always put the students first."
Kash says he believes that SGA should be more organized.
"Sometimes we tend to be a little unorganized, but all and all, SGA is pretty productive in things we do, but there is always room for improvement," Kash said.
Kash said he has visited several Kansas community colleges and believes GCCC is much nicer than most of them.
"I am going to go back home and promote Garden City because it is a very nice community college," Kash said. "I would like to see more people coming to college from out of Garden City."
According to Kash, his odds of winning are good because he knows the way student government works and he knows many people. Kash says he wishes Warren the best of luck.
