EDITOR'S NOTE: The following is the final installment of our series of historical pieces commemorating the college's upcoming 85th anniversary.

1) Public vote establishes Garden City college (1919)
The college was established by public vote making it the first Kansas community college. Operated by the local Board of Education, the college shared facilities with the Garden City High School for the first semester in its existence.

2) First graduating class (1920)
The college's first semester of the first academic year had an enrollment of 23 students. Mildred Hope, the only sophomore, was the first GCCC graduate.

3) First drama production (1920)
The comedy "And Home Came Ted" is performed by drama students in the auditorium.

4) Community College Act (1965)
Passed by Kansas legislature, the act made the college an independent, public institution. The "junior" was removed from all two-year Kansas colleges so they could provided training beyond a two-year education.

5) Residential living (1968)
The Trustees approve construction of a 61-room dormitory and lounge. The dorms were the first facility completed on the campus. In 1977, 14 units were added. On-campus facilities house 234 men and women. The college moves to the present-day campus over a period from 1969 to 1971.

6) Oldest Homecoming Queen (1978)
Effie Herrick, 53, is crowned on October 10 as the fall homecoming queen. She is oldest queen ever selected, a nominee of the drama club. Herrick was a freshman who resided in the dorms and mention of the crowing was made on the Johnny Carson Show.

7) Commencement speakers (1989)
Stephanie Stromer and Sally Robinson are the first students selected to be commencement speakers. Students were chosen this year, rather than a political figure, to focus more on student achievements.
