Watch someone throw a pot or learn dramatic make up techniques during the Fine Arts open house Thursday, Sept. 23.

The evening gives participants an opportunity to sample student works in the Fine Arts. Theatre, art and music, as well as a forensics showcase from the Humanities division will be featured between 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the Pauline Joyce Fine Arts Building. Admission is free.

"The King and I" cast will be rehearsing on the stage and in room 101, allowing the public to preview various numbers from the production. Arts patrons will be able to purchase theatre tickets beginning that evening. Public box office sales begin Oct. 25. Opening night is Oct. 29.

"It's a huge show and you can see the set going up literally before your eyes," said Skip Mancini, drama director and instructor.

"The King and I" crew members will be demonstrating stage make-up application, set building and costume construction. Music students will be playing various pieces from the musical in addi-tion to a jazz group that will perform in the band room.

Pottery students will demonstrate both sculpted and wheel-thrown techniques. Various pieces from the local potter's guild will be available for purchase. Arts patrons are eligible to enter a drawing for two ceramic pieces, created by art instructor Brian McCallum.

A tile piece by long-time pottery student Jim Mathews, 84, will become a permanent display near the ceramic studio. Mathews said he has enjoyed ceramics since the early '90s.

"It's addictive, really, I mean that in the purest sense," Matthews said.

The Mercer Gallery, located in the west wing of the building, features Southwest Kansas photographs by Dodge City Community College instructor Stacy Sparks. Her exhibit is titled "Isolation and Community on the High Plains."

Melodies will fill the auditorium where the college choir will perform several selections.

"I am very impressed with the way we sound this year," Haley Singhisen, sophomore, said.

Although not part of the Fine Arts Department, forensics and debate students will conduct an open forum, presenting actual competition presentations for the public.
