Greg Manning, Chartwells' district manager, said he could not comment about Caldwell's departure. However, Manning did say that Franks would complete the fall semester as interim director.
Franks came to Garden City from Lawrence, Kan., where he was the food service director for a private dorm. He has been employed by Chartwells for a little more than a year and was in the catering business for six years prior to that.
Residence students report the change in management has resulted in a change in service.
Wayne Wilder, Macon, Ga., said the food is better.
"I used to think it tasted like crap," Wilder said. "But now it has improved greatly."
Franks said he is enjoying his time in Garden City.
"I think the diversity of the residents and the friendliness of the residents has been welcoming," Franks said.
Franks said he is not sure this will be a permanent stay, but he's committed to the work he is here to do.
"In order to insure the quality the students, faculty and catering clients deserve and expect, Chartwells felt it necessary to implement a change," Franks said.
