There are many things around campus that draw questions from students, the latest, what are the computers in wooden cabinets around campus used for?
"The purpose of the Kiosks is to be able to get instant information without having to hunt all over for a computer," Mary Wilson, information technology director, said.
The new Kiosks will be available in the Academic, Science and Math, Fine Arts, and the Technical Buildings.
"We've been working on this for about a year," Wilson said. "Trying to figure out what to do. We couldn't really put the concept together the way we wanted to."
The Kiosks were installed during winter break and will be able to be used by next year. Students can check all available services on the GCCC website.
"Part of it came around because several of us visited campuses during conferences and saw what they were doing," Wilson said. "I felt like the cabinets we were using for the multimedia centers would be really good [for storage]."
Some options that will be available to students next year include the ability to check Blackboard, School Maestro and look up financial aid information. The Kiosks are not just for students though.
"If they are in a different building a faculty member could check their email," Wilson said. "So it is very helpful."
Web Adviser, for students, will be located under the current student section. It will enable students to see financial aid information, enrollment information, tuition costs such as the remaining balance, and even the ability to see awarded scholarships for the next year.
"We're also hoping that web payments will be available before long," Wilson said. "Once the financial aid office gets all of their information ready to go, we could turn this on for students to see the information at home."
The problem with this option is that not all students have access to electronic cash with some students not feeling safe making payments online.
