The Busters track and field team's performance was less than stellar as they rounded out their final regular season meet at the Kansas Relays in Lawrence, Kan. The team traveled to Lawrence April 21-23 with eight men and five women, only to come up empty handed.

"The women's 4x8 was an unimpressive showing," Dan Delgado, head track coach, said.

The women's 4x800 team finished with a time of 10:40, 33 seconds behind their best time of the season. Bobbie Gay, Great Falls, Mont., is dealing with a meniscus tear, that kept her from reaching her qualifying time for national competition in the 10,000-meter race.

"Bobbie is fighting a meniscus tear or IT-band problems," Delgado said. "It's causing her pain, but she keeps fighting through it and should score some points at the Region VI meet in the 10,000 [meter]."

Other than Gay's knee injury, Delgado said the team is psychically sound and ready to compete.

"The kid's are tired," Delgado said. "No matter what school you are talking about all the athletes are tired."

Delgado said that he is just trying to coach around those convinced they are tired.

"If there are any injuries, it is the mental fatigue injury," Delgado said. "That's what I would call it."

On the men's side T.J. Strangeowl, Lame Deere, Mont., qualified for the men's 5,000 meter race with a time of 15:29.

Everything has been going well for Strangeowl, with teammate Nate Preston, Omaha, Neb., pushing him through each race and practice.

"I'm glad I qualified because it was one of my goals," Strangeowl said. "I have been eating healthy and getting enough rest, trying to no overdo things."

To end their trip in Lawrence, the Busters were in attendance of a crowd of 26,211, making it the second largest crowd to ever attend the Kansas Relays.

The team witnessed as numerous Olympic athletes competed, breaking several records throughout the day. Among some of the competitors was 2004 100-meter Olympic champion Justin Gatlin.

Gatlin teamed up with Dwight Thomas, Rodney Martin, and Shawn Crawford to win the 4x100 meter invitational relay with a time of 38.16.

"It was a humbling experience to watch world class athletes," Delgado said. "If we, as a team got anything out of it, it's that you should try your hardest at the level that you compete at."

The Busters will travel to Coffeyville April 28 and 29, for the region VI championships, and again in Coffeyville on May 17.
