Linda Miller and Patty Knoll were among the eight students who competed for the opportunity to speak to more than 335 students who will receive their associate degrees or certificates and 100 FCCCLC students who will receive their GED high school equivalency diplomas.
Miller, who works part-time in the college's information and services department, said she entered the commencement speech competition in hopes of being able to extend her gratitude toward instructors, faculty and staff who had affected her throughout her time as a college student.
"I can't praise the instructors I've had at GCCC enough," Miller said. "They have taught me so much academically, but also they have allowed me to reach a higher level of confidence for myself. [The instructors] were always willing to help students that were willing to help themselves."
Miller is married to Al Miller, Garden City, and belongs to PTK. She is enrolled for fall in the Newman University outreach program at GCCC.
Knoll, computer lab supervisor and journalism club adviser at Holcomb High School, said she wanted people to know that even though they might not be sitting in a traditional classroom, they were still a part of the college.
"It doesn't matter whether you are taking Outreach and online classes, or a student on the campus, you're still a part of GCCC," Knoll said.
She and her husband, Robert, have two children, Josh and Lyndi, as well as a new granddaughter named Grace. Knoll plans to pursue her bachelor's degree but has yet to decide where.
Dean of technical education Judy Crymble will serve as master of ceremonies and college president Carol E. Ballantyne, Ph.D., and Dr. William S. Clifford, chairman of the Board of Trustees, will also speak. Beth Tedrow, dean of student services, will present the Outstanding Student awards. Criminal Justice students will present the colors and the National Anthem and other selections will be performed by College Singers.
OTHER ACTIVITIES:
Guests and graduates are invited by the Alpha Xi Upsilon Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa international academic honor society to donate non-perishable food or children's books as part of Project Graduation.
A reception for graduates and their families is scheduled to immediately follow at the Beth Tedrow Student Center.
The Black Student Union and the Garden City African-American Coalition will host a graduate luncheon from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at the Second Baptist Church, 1107 N. Main.
