Two GCCC students were among the 400 students in attendance at the 2006 U.N. Symposium in New York April 24-28.

Andrew Moorman, Garden City, and Bryce Friesen, Great Bend, Kan., were the only students representing Kansas at the symposium. They were selected to attend through a process of a nomination, application, and essay.

Moorman said the purpose of the symposium was finding networking opportunities and meeting people with the same interests. He said it was great to interact with students from 84 countries and listen to the keynote speakers.

"It was nice to hear people that are working with the United Nations," Moorman said. "You got to hear stuff from the horse's mouth."

Friesen said the three days were filled with speakers, breakout sessions, and panel discussions from people with careers in the U.N. In addition, the 400 attendees helped compose a resolution that the U.N. needs to revise itself and the Security Council, as well as generating more funding. The resolution is currently under review by ATHGO (Alliance Towards Harnessing Global Opportunities).

"We accomplished what he had intended to do, and there were very well educated people elected to write the document," Friesen said.

Friesen said he enjoyed the symposium but thought at first it was daunting because many of the students in attendance already had Master's degrees.

"Being around all these better educated people was intimidated," Friesen said. "But then, being able to run with these people was intellectually challenging."

Moorman said he recommends anyone interested in any kind of forum to jump at the chance to attend.

"It's a way of interacting with people and provides great learning opportunities," Moorman said.
