Concentrate now, goof around later

The sun is shining and the flowers are in full bloom. The bleak skies and icy conditions have disappeared for the season. But the irresistible weather puts a strain on focus, as students would rather hit the outdoors than the books. There are three weeks left of school, but it's easy to put off homework and responsibilities until the last minute. In other words: concentrate now, play later.

There are students awaiting the moment of receiving a degree from GCCC, while others look forward to another year of achieving that goal. Either way, as the semester dwindles down, it's important to take every assignment seriously and meet all deadlines.

Failing to do so will result in dropped grades, loads of stress, and falling victim to procrastination.

Procrastination is the number-one killer in academic studies. At some point in time, every one of us has put something off and later paid for it; some of us have actually learned from that mistake. Others continue repeating the action.

When instructors give us homework, they expect us to be mature enough to handle the workload and get it done on time. It's almost like slapping them in the face when we needlessly procrastinate. Then we complain when they dock us a letter grade when we had the clear idea of what needs to be completed. And when finals week arrives, we are pulling all nighters, praying miraculously that we pull off a passing grade in a class because we suddenly start caring about whether or not we're going to make it. We can't depend on others to do our work and pick up the slack; we can only rely on ourselves to accomplish goals.

Yes, the weather is beautiful, but it'll still be here after school ends. This is the time to put all your focus into every little detail of your education before it's too late. Every day of this last stretch of school is crucial to academic success. There will always be time for leisure activities and parties. You want to be able to relax and enjoy the blue skies and hot temperatures over the summer months, not worry about re-taking courses and beating yourself up because you didn't take your classes seriously. So don't go crying to Mom when you fail a course or don't have enough credits to graduate.
