The 2005-2006 sports season has seen many ups and downs, record breaking performances, and honors never before achieved. To the Silhouette sports staff, these are the most memorable moments of the school year.
Come back in Dodge
On Sept. 24 the Busters football team gained a mere 88 yards of offense, turned the ball over once and trailed Dodge City 14-0 at halftime.
However, the Busters got rolling in the third quarter, as they scored on the opening two drives and cut the lead to 14-10 at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, Marcus Cross, Houston, Texas, scored on a 23-yard run to give Garden City their first lead, 17-14.
After scoring 20 points in the final quarter the Busters defense sealed the win with a late interception, to win the game 30-22. The Busters' victory maintained their 27-game, 19-year winning streak over the Conqs.
Breit sets season record
Twenty-nine years, that's how long the season strikeout record at stood untouched. That was until Aaron Breit, Hays, Kan., toed the rubber. Already holding the record for most career strikeouts at GCCC, Breit took aim at the single season record this year.
And with a 15-strikeout performance in the first round of the Region VI tournament at Williams Stadium Breit broke the record.
Finishing his career at GCCC with 185 total strikeouts and 108 strikeouts on the season to go along with a 19-5 career record. Breit's 108 strikeouts are two more than the record set in 1977 by Rob St. Clair.
Delgado earns
Region VI coaching title
Head Cross Country Coach Dan Delgado has had an outstanding year, coaching his teams to a 6th and 7th place finish at the NJCAA national cross country meet.
Before this, Delgado led the men's team to a second place finish at the Region VI meet at Buffalo Dunes Golf Course, while the women took the third place spot.
Starting out the season the men's team were ranked No. 2 and the women's team were ranked No. 5. Capping off his first season as head coach, Delgado also earned Region VI coach of the year honors.
