Before facing the Trojans, Garden would have to face the Thunderbirds from Cloud County in the first round of play.
"We started out with Cloud and beat them 10-0," Head Coach Phil Terpstra said. "That was probably the best game we've played all season."
Having defeated Cloud the Busters were pitted against Colby for the first time in the double-elimination tournament, a game that would become, perhaps, the toughest match-up of the tournament.
The Busters took the Trojans into extra innings before losing 2-1 in the ninth inning.
"We played really good," Terpstra said. "No one could get a run across for either team until the final inning; Colby just managed to find a way."
After the Trojans shut Garden down, sending them to the losing side of the bracket, the Busters were faced with the task of defeating the T-Birds for a second time in the tournament.
"We must have had Clouds number," Terpstra said.
The Busters would go on to defeat Cloud County 13-5, adding a season high 17 hits in the contest.
"I don't think our team has ever played that good," Katy Lauder, Granite Shoals, Texas, said.
The Busters had an impressive showing, with every starter having one hit and at least one run scored. Ashley McDonald, Allen, Texas, finishing 2-4 with four RBI. Ashley Arbon, Tooele, Utah, was 2-3 with two runs and two RBI, while Kevyn Hartgrove, Granite Shoals, Texas, went 3-4 with 3 runs and Katy Lauder was 3-4 and drove in 4 runners.
Defeating Cloud for the second time meant facing Colby once more to earn a trip to the championship.
Just as the Busters seemed to have Cloud's number, Colby seemed to have their thumb on Garden, who would repeat with a 2-1 win to end the Busters season.
"I think we gave Colby as much trouble as they have had this whole season," Lauder said. "We gave it our all and it showed, they just have a little more talent than we do."
