the Region VI track meet with individual efforts that will earn them a trip to the outdoor nationals meet in Coffeyville, Kan.

Among some of the individual efforts was Damien Price, San Augustine, Texas, who finished fourth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.70 seconds.

"I was ranked 4th going into the meet and I wanted to go out and put on a good performance," Price said. "Coach Delgado never had a chance to see what I could do in high school, so I wanted to show him and everyone else what I was capable of."

Joining Price is Trent Mazanec, Colby, Kan., in the javelin throw, who had the farthest throw in the nation for junior colleges earlier this season.

Assistant coach Jeb Meschke said that Mazanec had came down with the flu the week prior to the meet, and still wasn't completely well by the time of the meet.

"He was hyped up when he was out there even though he was sick," Meschke said. "He threw up a couple of times between throws, but he stuck with it."

Mazanec's performance earned him a second place finish over all, with a throw of 59.10 meters, behind Cowley County's Cameron Traxson's throw of 62.47 meters.

"When Traxson broke over 200 feet (60 meters) it really motivated me to try and make it to nationals," Mazanec said.

Mazanec is currently sitting in third place overall going into the national meet.

"I can see him winning nationals," Meschke said. "He'll be right in the mix of the top three throwers no matter what,"

On the women's side, the 4x800 meter team placed third with a time of 10:05.62.

"We didn't do very well at the Kansas Relays, so this was inspiring for nationals," Shantelle Brown, Garden City, said. "We just picked each other up and made sure we were ready to go out and have fun."

Brown also competed in the 800-meter race and finished in fifth place with a time of 2:28.81, following Nikki Knowles fourth place finish in a time of 2:25.97.

Leticia Padilla, Hugoton, Kan., placed fourth in the women's 5,000 meter race while Bobbie Gay, Great Falls, Mont., earned a fifth place finish in the women's 10.000 meter race.

T.J. Strangeowl, Lame Deere, Mont., earned places in both the 1500 meter race with a time of 4:09.79 and the 5,000-meter race with a time of 15:35.28.

Teammate Nate Preston, Omaha, Neb., earned a 6th place finish in the 10,000 meter race with a finishing time of 33:21.61.

Head Coach Dan Delgado said that he was pleased with the overall efforts and is looking forward to watching them compete at the national track meet, as well as coaching next years returning runners and throwers.
