With high expectations entering this season, the Busters cross country teams took their first step in the right direction at the Harrier Invitation at Great Bend, Kan. The Lady Busters won the meet, while the guy's team finished second behind Cloud County.
"The women's team turned in some solid performances," Dan Delgado, head track coach, said. "We still have a long ways to go, but this should have given them a big boost of confidence."
The Lady Busters had three runners finish in the top five. Nikki Knowles, Garden City, won the meet with a time of 13:18, Leticia Padilla, Hugoton, Kan., finished second with a time of 13:24 and Kate Dibbern, York, Neb., finished fourth with a time of 13:28.
"The team performed amazingly with a good strong effort," Dibbern said. "The success we have will come from all the hard work."
Leading the Busters team this year are sophomores Nate Preston and Dane Steward.
Steward led the men's team with a time of 15:27 giving him fourth place.
"I felt like I ran a good race, but once I finished I thought I could have done better," Steward, Plains, Mont., said.
Preston finished the race in 15:49 giving him a fifth place finish behind Steward.
"We ran against some really good competition and to come out second was great," Preston, Omaha, Neb., said. "The team has been training and working hard during practice so we will just be getting better."
With two full teams, a Region VI championship is not out of the picture for either team or of a top five finish at nationals for the women's team and a top three finish for the men's.
"We have the runners to defeat Cloud County, but it will just take some time," Delgado said.
The Busters' next meet is Sept. 2 in Lawrence, Kan.
