Hot and muggy conditions in the South, not to mention the No.2 team in the nation, wouldn't get in the way of a victory for the Busters. Garden City forced turnovers on five consecutive possessions, and held on to upset Trinity Valley, Texas, 21-17.
"Despite having a rough start on special teams, we're going to continue kicking field goals, and are hoping to improve on that this weekend," head coach J.J. Eckert said.
Trinity Valley started its first possession on its own 43-yard line. The Broncbuster defense forced the Cardinals to go three and out. On second-and-goal freshman Sean Setzer, Portland, Ore., hit Eldred King, Thomaston, Geo, for an 18-yard touchdown pass.
Offensive woes continued for Trinity Valley, as Derrick Raymer, Goodland, Kan., intercepted Ben McMahan's pass deep in Cardinal territory. Setzer then hit Michael Choate, Haviland, Kan. for a five-yard touchdown on fourth down. The Buster defense then forced a fumble that Dustin Spears, Osborne, Kan., recovered at about midfield. The offense failed to score and was forced to punt.
The first play of the second quarter began with an interception courtesy of Dee Brown, Whiteville, NC. Once again the offense struggled to move the ball and had to punt. Brown then snagged his second interception on a consecutive drive at the Cardinal's 28-yard line. Setzer made his second connection with King for a 28-yard touchdown. Garden City led 21-0 with 10:27 left in the second quarter, before Trinity Valley got on the board. Raymond Mitchell, Wichita, Kan., fumbled his first carry, and the Cardinals took advantage of the turnover, resulting in a 26-yard touchdown run by McMahan.
Stellar play by both defenses in the third quarter kept both teams from scoring, but Trinity Valley struck first in the second half when McMahan scored on a quarterback keeper from the one-yard line, making the score 21-14. One drive later, a 52-yard completion gave Trinity Valley a first down on the Garden City 6. But the Buster defense held the Cardinal's to 27-yard field goal. Trinity Valley got the ball back at about mid-field with three minutes left in the game, but the Buster's forced a turnover on downs. The Busters then ran out the clock to clinch the victory 21-17.
Setzer went 17-31 for 191 yards and three touchdowns. King led the Busters in receiving with 70 yards and two touchdowns. Jeff Blanchard, West Palm Beach, Fla., led the Busters in rushing with 14 carries for 33 yards. Defensively, Raymer led the team with nine tackles and an interception. Leading the team with interceptions was Dee Brown.
"We came into the game with fire and intensity and proved we could stop the run," Raymer said.
The Butler County Grizzlies come calling as the Busters look for revenge against the pre-season no. 3 team in the land Sept. 2. Butler doubled up the Buster's last season 62-31. The Grizzlies pitched a shutout against Kilgore, Texas, 26-0 Aug. 26. The Busters will have to shut down tailback Brandon Barnett, who ran for 68 yards and two touchdowns against Kilgore. Kick-off is 7 p.m. at Butler's Galen Blackmore Stadium.
"After looking at last week's film, our main goal is to improve on offense and defense," Eckert said.
