The crowning of the king and queen at the football game brings out the spirit of the community as homecoming week arrives.
"Homecoming is a way to get away from academics for a change," Ryan Ruda, co-sponsor of SGA said. "It's a way for students to show support for their college. It's also the setting where alumni have a chance to come back and see how the campus has changed. It's more of a focus around a central week."
Homecoming week will be filled with events starting with the volleyball game between GCCC and Barton County, Wednesday, Sept. 20 at 6:30. Game fans have a chance to win $100 by displaying their school spirit during the game. At 8 p.m., a volleyball game involving GCCC students and employees will occur, giving students the chance to slam the game on their instructors. To sign up for the game, contact Nikola Petrovic, head volleyball coach, at 276-9615.
There will be a bonfire and a hot dog eating contest, as well as a live DJ and refreshments in the athletic parking lot at 8:30 p.m., Sept 21. As the week comes to an end, the parade, BBQ and crowning of the king and queen finish out the week.
"The parade will be here at the college instead of downtown, where student organizations and clubs ride decorated floats around campus," Ruda said.
The parade will go from 10:30 - 11 a.m. where the BBQ, activities and food will be served afterward. At 1 p.m. a sand volleyball game will begin, as well as horseshoes, basketball and other games and activities.
"We basically help with the bonfire, and we donate the hotdogs and pop at the game, kind of like a prep rally," Barb Schultz, dance and cheer coach, said. "The tailgate party is sponsored by Chartwell's but we also help out with that as well. During the game, the dancers will perform and then the queen and king will be crowned."
As the day winds up for the kick, the Tailgate Party sets the spirit at 5 p.m. for the football game as the Broncbusters fight against the Hutchinson Dragons at 7 p.m., where the crowning of the homecoming king and queen will take place.
"Last year, the cosmetology department painted faces at the game, and we also give awards to fans who can show their spirit and get the crowd going," Ruda said.
