A recital Sept. 24 will showcase GCCC's newest acquired talent, a graduate of Julliard. The recital which will take place in the Pauline Joyce Fine Arts Building auditorium, at 3 p.m. featuring Dr. Priscilla Hallberg playing the violin, accompanied by Carolyn Klassen on the piano.

Hallberg is the new director of strings and director of the Southwest Kansas music academy, along with being a strings instructor.

Hallberg has a degree in violin performance from the University of Iowa, Boston University and Rutgers University she also attended Julliard School in New York. She was a member of the Boston Pops-Esplanade Orchestra for 27 years and has also worked with the Atlantic Symphony in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Hallberg moved to Garden City from Iowa when she learned that GCCC was interested in creating a strings program.

"I got a great job offer and since the college I was teaching at didn't have a strong strings program I moved," Hallberg said.

Klassen, keyboard instructor and piano lab coordinator, who will accompany, Hallberg hopes people take the time to go to the recital.

"It's [recital] kind of to introduce her to the community," Klassen, said. "It's amazing to have someone of the caliber of Dr. Hallberg in the community, I hope people take advantage of it and go see a professional show."

Hallberg has expectations for the recital as well.

"I hope I'll get a lot of people who might be interested in playing the violin, or have children play," Hallberg said. "I hope to build up enthusiasm."

Hallberg has a varied taste in the types of music she likes to play.

"I love to play classical, jazz, and even bluegrass," Hallberg said. "We picked pieces [for the recital] that are fun. Some of the composers are Brahms, Tartini, Kreisler, Massenet, and Sara Sate."

Klassen urges people to attend the recital.

"It's free," Klassen said. "It's what they pay lot's of money for in New York and we've got it right here."
