Homecoming: A time to remember, reflect,

Homecoming is next week. Many students are hurrying to design posters, make floats for the downtown parade, and shop for the perfect outfit to show off at the dance. Alumni come home to reflect on past experiences and old friendships. All for the sake of the tradition we call homecoming. It's the perfect occasion to meet new people and shed the old feel of high school and take on the Broncbuster identity of college.
Wait a minute. That's not what's going on at all. Unfortunately, this is not the reality at GCCC. Homecoming has lost its flavor, its spirit. Students dodge the activities, brush aside making floats and rarely consider showing up to festivities.
For whatever the reason, whether it is writing an important paper, doing some science project, or just believing he or she is too cool, students don't get as involved anymore. We seem to forget that we are in college and a significant part of being in college is getting involved.
Homecoming is a celebration of past individuals who have graduated from the college. It is the opportunity to show pride and unify individuals on campus. While still important to some, the general attitude of the campus is that it is just another week. Perhaps this is because in high school we at least got out of school for certain events. But the purpose of homecoming is not to get out of school. It is to encourage students, faculty, staff, and alumni to take pride in our college.
Events like these don't just happen; countless hours of planning, preparation, and hard work are put into making homecoming happen. Yet these efforts are wasted when no one participates. Everyone seems to have an attitude that since the last few homecomings have been boring, this year's will be too. Therefore, it will be. Unless we change it, we, the students of GCCC, can make this year different, we are the only ones who have the power to make it count. Homecoming can be one of the highlights of the year rather than just another week. But in order for that to happen our attitudes must be adjusted.
So don't get so caught up in thinking you're too cool, take a break from studies, and take the opportunity to enjoy a supportive bonfire to pump up the football team, or a celebration dance after the big game. Let's get involved for a change, and not let the simple pleasures in life pass us by.
