The Broncbuster volleyball squad continued their season on the road Aug. 31, dropping a non-conference match up against Otero College in Lajunta, Colo. The Lady Busters took the Lady Rattlers into overtime in the second match, but were unable to avoid the sweep, 24-30, 31-33, 24-30.

The Lady Busters headed into conference mode, with Jayhawk Conference play beginning Sept. 10 at Dodge City. The Lady Busters needed only three games to knock off the Lady Conqs to earn their first conference win, 30-20, 34-32, 30-27.

The Lady Busters traveled to Arkansas City Sept. 8-9 for the Cowley Tournament, where they went 3-1 and had a 12-game winning streak going into the final match of the tournament. Friday's action began with a matinee sweep over Labette County, 30-22, 30-21, 30-18. The Lady Busters turned back around and defeated Dodge City for a second time in three days, 30-22, 30-24, 30-28.

On Saturday, the Lady Busters extended their winning streak to 12 games with a 30-20, 30-27, 30-20 victory over Northern Oklahoma. But the Lady Busters met their match in the finale of the tournament, falling to No.1 ranked Cowley County 25-30, 11-30, 25-30.

"We played real hard but fell apart in the second set," Shawna Ruiz, Chino Valley, Ariz., said. "In the third set, we didn't just give it to them [Cowley], they had to earn it."

Head coach Nikola Petrovic said the squad had a successful run at the Cowley Tournament.

"They played the No.1 team in the nation and took 25 points," Petrovic said. "They didn't reach peak performance but still did really good."

The team is preparing for the GCCC Invitational Sept. 15-16. Petrovic says the tournament will be much harder, as they will face the No. 7 and No. 9 teams in the nation. Matches are 4 p.m. Friday, and 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday. The invitational marks the first home games on the season for the Lady Busters.

"We're really excited to play in front of the fans," Shaw said. "We're a little tired of the road so it's good to be home."

As for injuries, Petrovic said there's a full squad now, as Vanessa Bridgeman, Scott City, Kan., returns with the team after sitting out from injury. Bridgeman said she couldn't wait to get back on the court.

"It made me see how bad I want to play," Bridgeman said. "I want to get well as soon as I can."

The Lady Busters were on the road last night at Hutchinson. Scores were not available at press time.
