Boom! This sound along with many others reverberates through the halls of the Fine Arts building every Wednesday at noon.

"A drum circle is a gathering of individuals that become one member of group, a unity, it's not one of us, it's all of us," Adam Sharp, English instructor and circle organizer said.

Musicians gather at drums circles bringing along with them their drums and tambourines. Drum circles are now creating more benefits than just rhythm development such as stress relief, recreation and a new ways to meet other people.

"It's relaxing, I meet other people and I didn't have to have a lot of experience," Diana Sejas, Garden City, said. "I get to explore different rhythms, and work with everyone's rhythm, not just my own."

The drum circle doesn't require years of drumming background or musical skills. Sharp, starts each session with a friendly conversation about drums or any other topic, to relax his attendants.

"We explore general rhythms, a couple of African ones, and some Afro-Cuban as well, we might explore some Brazilian rhythms as well," Sharp said. "If we had enough individual's we could have a club, then I wouldn't be the leader, I'd be the facilitator."

An average of four or five people attend each session. With drums ranging from djembes, to bongos, to shakers, the GCCC drum circle creates a wide array of sounds.

A djembe is a goblet-shaped drum with a skin stretched over one end. The bongos follow the same construction, but have two drums attached together and are smaller in size.

"It's an opportunity to enjoy rhythm with a group and it's a low stress involvement in music," Becky Thomas, Garden City, said. "I joined because I loved the Indian culture and I love music. It's a stress reliever."

Drum circles incorporate teamwork and meditation, which creates the relaxing feeling when the music stops. The drum circle meets in the Vocal Music Room, in the Fine Arts building Wednesday at noon.
