Issue date: 9/28/06 Section: Sports
Hard work and improvement have paid off for the Buster harriers. The Buster men and women are both ranked 7th in the national (NJCAA) poll.

"We have the toughest schedule in the nation and probably the most intense training program in the nation," Dan Delgado, head cross country coach, said.

The Buster Harriers ran in the Colorado Springs Cross Country Invitational Sept. 23. The Busters brought home a fourth place finish. On the women's side the Lady Busters finished fifth.

"We keep improving and by the end of the season hopefully we will be in the top three at the regional and national meet," Andrea Steele, Grand Island, Neb., said.

Leading the Buster men was Dane Steward, Plains, Mont. Steward completed the five-mile run in 27:08 for 7th place.

"I feel like I need to inspire the younger runners, I don't care how I finish individually I'm more for the team this year," Steward said. "Nate and I have been here and want to leave a good impression on the new runners."

Nate Preston, Omaha, Neb., was also in the top 20. He finished the race in 12th place with a time of 27:47.

Nikki Knowles, Garden City, led the women's team with a 23rd place finish with a time of 25:32 out running teammate Leticia Padilla, Hugoton, Kan., who finished 25th with a time of 25:34.

"Performance in practice is far more important than a performance in a meet at this time of the season," Delgado said.

The Harriers run at the Rocky Mountain Shootout in Boulder, Colo., Saturday.
