But fatigue and injuries got the best of the Lady Busters, as they dropped a conference match-up to Colby 30-25, 28-30, 23-30, 20-30.
"The girls stepped up and pushed as hard as they could," Assistant coach Carey Chenowith said. "They just got tired and because of injuries, there's not many of them."
The Lady Busters won the first set of the match, but the Lady Trojans battled back to take the next three sets and ultimately the victory. The Lady Busters drop to 8-9 overall. The Lady Trojans continue to lead the western division of the Jayhawk Conference at 4-0 and improve to 14-12 overall.
"If they had played the same way they had the first match, they could've won,"Chenowith said.
The Lady Busters have dropped five of their last six games, all of which have been at home. The Lady Busters captured their first home win at the GCCC Invitational over Western Texas 30-26, 30-27, 30-22, Sept. 15. But the Lady Busters were swept in the next two games of the tournament, falling to Northeastern, Colo., 21-30, 10-30, 20-30, and Western Nebraska, 18-30, 12-30, 13-30. The team dropped their third straight game to Barton 25-30, 19-30, 26-30 Sept. 20, before breaking the streak against Lamar, Colo., 28-30 30-28, 30-28, 30-20 Sept. 22.
Last night's loss drops the Lady Busters to 1-3 in conference play. Head coach Nikola Petrovic says at this point, conference rankings don't matter.
"We try not to think about it," Petrovic said. "Our goal is to finish second before regionals and then go on to win regionals."
Petrovic says to focus on the end of the year, the team is spending more time on conditioning and in the weight room, and practices are more intense.
"We want to pull together and work as a team," Petrovic said. "We want to reach our top form."
The Lady Busters have another long road trip ahead; their next home game won't be until Oct. 26 against Butler. Petrovic says despite being in front of a great crowd, the team isn't ready to play at home.
"It's a little too intense," Petrovic said. "Our gym is more confusing."
