The Broncbuster rodeo team is set to open their season at Colby Friday. There are 30 members riding for Garden City this year, 17 who are new to the team.
"We put a lot of work into recruiting some tough women riders this year," Jim "Jim Boy" Hash, head rodeo coach, said. "Our main goal this year is to get our women's team on a level that our men's team has been competing at these past few years."
After a solid year last season, Cort Scheer, Elsmere, Neb., returns to defend his region championship in saddle bronc riding, an event where he finished eighth in the nation last year.
"He will more than likely be involved in a heated race for the coveted All-Around Cowboy title," Hash said.
The team will be participating in 10 rodeos this year across the two-state Central Plains Region of the Intercollegiate Rodeo Association.
"Our overall goal remains the same as it has been these past few year," Hash said. "That is to win a team championship in at least one of the 10 regional rodeos, men or women. We have come very close several times these past few years."
