Amalee Dykes (19), Leavenworth, Kan., dribbles the ball around against a Kansas Wesleyan JV defender Sept. 20. The Lady Busters lost 3-0. They currently stand in third place in the Jayhawk Conference standings.

With less than a month before playoff action, the Busters sit atop the Jayhawk Conference rankings, three points ahead of rival Dodge City, and the Lady Busters are in third place, just two points behind Butler and Dodge.

"It's where we have expected to be all along, we just need to stay there," Head Coach Jeff Huffman said.

Sunday's victories over Coffeyville helped the teams gain ground in the standings. In the first game of the doubleheader, the Lady Busters got out to an early 1-0 lead with a goal from Aggie Kozak, Leavenworth, Kan., assisted by Amalee Dykes, Leavenworth, Kan. Kozak would add two more assists on the day, on goals from Maria Reyes, Garden City, and Jaime Hainge, Colorado Springs, Colo. The Lady Busters held on for the 3-0 shutout over the Lady Ravens.

"There's no reason to get excited right now," Huffman said. "We've played so many games in the conference and some of these teams have only played three games total."

Bryan Arruda, Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, was the leading scorer for the men's game; in fact, he was the lone scorer for both teams, as the Busters shut out the Ravens 2-0.

Arruda's first goal was a penalty kick, which Coffeyville head coach Courey Ferrer argued with the referees about the call and was eventually thrown out of the game. Arruda added another goal, assisted by Justin Safer, Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. After the assist, Safer received a red card for a footed tackle.

In addition to his two goals, Arruda received a yellow card, his fourth card on the season. He is just one yellow card away from being suspended for one game.

"It was a very physical game there was a lot of yellow cards, I mean they had two players thrown out and their head coach thrown out, we had one guy thrown out," Huffman said.

Prior to the Coffeyville game, the Lady Busters (3-2-1, 3-4-1) had dropped two of their previous three games, both shutouts to Kansas Wesleyan JV Sept. 14 (3-0) and Hutchinson Sept. 18 (12-0). The women earned their first shutout on the season with a 3-0 victory over Cloud County Sept. 16.

The Busters (5-1-1, 6-2-1) have won three straight, all of which have been conference wins over Cloud County, Kansas City, Kan., and Coffeyville.

Garden City hosts Neosho for an afternoon conference doubleheader, with the women's match-up at 2 p.m., followed by the men's at 4 p.m., at Memorial Stadium.
